Deciding to get help for anxiety often raises a practical question: what actually happens next? Anxiety treatment follows a clear path. It starts with an assessment, moves into a plan built around your symptoms, and uses therapy, skills practice and sometimes medication to help you feel steadier. The level of care can range from one therapy session a week to a structured program several days a week, and you can move between levels as your needs change.
Step by Step
Most anxiety treatment programs follow the same basic steps, whatever the level of care.
Evidence-Based Care
CBT and Exposure Work
Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is the most studied therapy for anxiety. It helps you notice anxious thoughts, test how accurate they are, and change the habits that keep anxiety going.
Exposure work, which is part of CBT for many anxiety disorders, means gradually and safely facing feared situations until they lose their grip.
DBT, Group and Family Support
Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) adds skills for intense emotion, such as calming the body during a spike of panic and tolerating distress without making it worse.
Group therapy lets you practice skills with others who understand what anxiety feels like, which many people find reduces shame. Family members can also take part in care when the person in treatment wants them involved.
Medication
Medication can help too, especially when anxiety is moderate to severe or therapy alone hasn't brought enough relief.
Understanding how anxiety medication works can help you decide what to ask your prescriber.
Levels of Care
The main difference between levels of care is how much time and structure each one provides. All three let you live at home.
Structure
Typical schedule: Most of the day, most weekdays
Best fit: Anxiety that makes it hard to work, attend school or manage daily routines
A partial hospitalization program (PHP) is the most structured level of outpatient care. Your days center on group and individual therapy, skills practice and medication management, and you return home each evening. PHP fits when panic, worry or avoidance has made it hard to get through a normal day, or when weekly therapy has not been enough.
Structure
Typical schedule: Several hours a day, a few days a week
Best fit: Anxiety that needs more than weekly therapy, while you keep up work or school
An intensive outpatient program (IOP) offers several sessions a week while you keep up with work, school or family. You practice skills in group, apply them in daily life between sessions, and bring back what happened. Many people start in IOP, and others step down to it after PHP.
Structure
Typical schedule: One or two sessions a week
Best fit: Milder symptoms, or continued support after PHP or IOP
Outpatient therapy means regular individual sessions, usually once a week, often alongside medication management. It suits people whose anxiety is real but manageable day to day, and people who have finished a more intensive program and want to keep building on their progress.
Finding Your Fit
Your care team looks at how severe your symptoms are, how much they disrupt daily life, what treatment you have already tried, and how much support you have at home. The goal is enough structure to make progress without more time away from your life than you need. Levels are flexible, and your team can move you up or down as things change.
The length of treatment depends on the type of anxiety, how long it has been present and the level of care. PHP and IOP usually last several weeks, and many people continue in outpatient therapy afterward. A structured course of CBT for anxiety often runs about 12 to 20 weekly sessions. Many people notice changes within the first several weeks, even though lasting progress takes consistent practice.
Many private insurance plans cover PHP, IOP and outpatient care for anxiety. Coverage varies by plan, so the simplest first step is to verify your insurance before your assessment. Our admissions team can walk you through what your plan covers.
